Breakfast at Henry's Cafe Bar

As with many of my foodie related excursions – this one was a happy accident. The original plan was, after a heavy night out on the tiles, to enjoy a long lie in before heading to Yates on Westgate Street for some much needed sustenance to appease our raging hangovers.

This is always the plan.

It has never succeeded. Not once! Yet I still persist and never having a backup plan.

So, with not a single clue where to go, we wandered off into town. Now there are plenty of places serving a good fry up in Cardiff city centre. But each time we found one it never seemed…this may seem greedy…but it never seemed enough.
Continuing our search, we arrived at Henry's. At last! Somewhere that didn't just do your bog standard fry up – Henry's has a whole breakfast menu (Not that the fry up looked bog standard [pork and leek sausages anyone?] with a vegetarian option including Glamorgan sausages)!

Settling into Henry's relaxed interior, we ordered pots of tea (£1.70 each) and settled down to the important business of choosing a meal. After much deliberation my partner decided on the Eggs Royale (£4.95), two freshly toasted English muffins, topped with thinly sliced smoked salmon, two poached eggs and a generous amount of hollandaise sauce. I, going for a variation on a theme, chose the Eggs Benedictine (£4.95) – which, for those who don't know, is served with bacon.

Being desperately hungry after our travels, we ordered extras – pork and leek sausages for me, a hash brown and portion of mushrooms for my partner (extras are priced at 75p each). When our food arrived, we realised the extras were probably not needed but were devoured regardless.

The muffins were toasted to perfection, the eggs cooked well (though I do love it when they leave them "soft" so that the yolk oozes all over the warm muffins) and the sauce was the right balance of creamy and sharp. The salmon was plentiful – a generous heap atop each muffin – whilst my bacon was crisp, and also delightfully smoky.

The extras were served separately – which did seem a little odd – but were equally good. The pork and leek sausages in particular come highly recommended.

The meal came to £16.30 in total, which may seem a lot for breakfast – but by golly it was worth it!
