Italian Passions

Originally Featured on Walesonline

It started, as so many things do these days, with a throwaway comment on twitter – that Jamie’s Italian is now the best Italian restaurant in the whole of Cardiff.

With dozens of Italian restaurants and cafés across the city, this is quite a bold statement to make. The South Wales area benefitted hugely from the influx of Italian immigrants, seeking to make a new life, after the Second World War (my family among them) and their legacy can be seen in the eateries that populate the area.

So is a young man from Essex really making the best Italian food? Tutored by the late Rose Gray at The River Café, and that other newcomer to the Cardiff food scene, Antonio Carluccio, he certainly has the right credentials.

In less than a week, hundreds of Welsh and Italian rugby fans will be descending on the city, and with a 2.30pm kick-off, many will be sampling the delights of the city, filling their bellies before heading to the stadium.

I throw it open to you, what is your favourite Italian in Cardiff? Can the new Jamie’s and Carluccio’s really match up to “how mamma makes it”? And where will you be eating on match day?
