Bali - A Welcome Suprise on Chippy Lane

Located on "Chippy Alley" (Caroline Street) in Cardiff, Bali seems oddly placed. It's just outside the side entrance into the new Brewery Quarter, which is populated by trendy restaurants and bars, but it's neighbours are purveyors of greasy food and pornography (yup there's an adult book store there).

However, this is no bad thing, as the ground rent is obviously cheaper than in the Quarter, the food is cheaper too!

Dom and I dived in there on Saturday, desperate to stay dry and appease our belly grumbles. The promise of two courses of Indonesian delights for £5.95 seemed like a good offer and it was quiet, unlike the other places we'd tried (damn match day).

To start we shared our plates of Chicken Satay and Indonesian Potato Cakes (apologies for not remembering what they are listed on the menu as! It's been a long weekend). The chicken skewers were charcoal grilled and succulent. My only complaint was with only two skewers, what else did I have to dip into the gorgeous peanut dip (my finger apparently! don't panic - it was clean). Dom's potato cakes were spicey and the chilli dip was a good choice, if a little sweet.

Next came the main event, Nasi Gorang for Dom and a Malay Chicken Curry with steamed rice for me. Dom's dish was a sight to behold, truly a huge portion considering it was off the lunchtime specials. The shrimps and chicken were both beautifully tender, and the rice was flavoursome. If it hadn't have been for the sheer ammount of peas, I'd have stolen it for myself.

My curry was equally fab: the chicken was, again, tender and very spicey. Bliss. The rice was cleansing and much needed. Could have done with some more satay sauce but thats just being greedy.

The meal left us full without being stuffed, and at £16.40 including drinks, it was well priced and much cheaper than the Thai place in the Quarter, just feet away.

Great for vegetarians too: their tofu dishes are amazing
They are indeed - I took two vegetarian and vegan friends there over the summer and they loved that they had so much great food to pick from.

Went there again last week and was a bit disappointed by the service - I think they are breaking in some new staff!
