Mini Bites: April

Spring is a busy time, with the gardening finally waking up after the harsh winter and thoughts turning to BBQs and picnics to be had.

Love Food?

To celebrate the start of Spring, we headed down to Love Food's Spring Festival in Bristol.  I make no secret that this is one of my favourite festivals in terms of being able to talk to producers, as well as catch up on the ever-excellent Rude Health Rants.

It was great chatting to passionate people as well as trying some great food - The Sausage Fest's Moorish Lamb, proving that a good banger doesn't have to just be pork.  They were amazing as part of a tagine when we got home, served with a buckwheat salad, pittas and humuus.

It was also great to see some Welsh producers crossing the border including Venison from the Vale who sold us some great quality (and very cheap!) venison mince.  Brecon-based Caradoc cheese biscuits was also a great find and I especially enjoyed their Pear & Earl Grey biscuits.  Find them soon at Wally's Deli.

Missed this one?  The next Love Food Festival is scheduled for May 1st, with other dates planned right through to the summer.

Out and About

Restaurant openings abound at the moment, with Brown's and The Crown Social dominating much of the talk.

Oscar's of Cowbridge have also launched their Cardiff venue and first impressions looks promising.  I particularly enjoyed the Carrot and Chickpea Fritters, which came with an excellent beetroot humuss, and the Rabbit & Apple Terrine.  Looking forward to visiting for lunch very soon so watch this space for a full review.

Las Iguanas has taken the natural progression and opened a branch in Mermaid Quay.  As someone who works in the Bay area, the lure of after-work cocktails could prove strong - with the Cava Royale and the classic Mojito proving popular on opening night.

Ooh La La

I've received word that Jean Cristophe Novelli is visiting Cardiff tomorrow so food lovers should keep their eyes peeled around the town centre, particularly around the Capitol Centre.
